Pattanaik has written a number of fine books on Hindu mythology, but this is his masterpiece. It is certainly the most readable retelling of the Mahabharata in English.
Pattanaik includes stories from folk versions outside the Sanskrit original, as well as personal insights which do much to illuminate the material. The Mahabharata itself--the classic tale of an ancient, cataclysmic war in North India--is incredibly moving.

Nicely put together by the author Hinduism is simple , it is so simple that it does not need much thought to decide right vs wrong - yet not all supposed righteous actions have intended results - the triad of karma dharma and destiny!

Great read and a good refresh of Mahabharata from my childhood. Although the way everything is written feels a bit rushed and the narrative is sometimes too shallow in areas where it should not be. The illustrations are great and is probably one of the most creative I have ever seen.
The telling of stories intermingled with "blocks" An ingenuous format for the summarizing of the fantastic Mahabharata. The telling of stories intermingled with "blocks" giving interpretations from various regions of the sub-continent and a sampling of religious interpretations.
The illustrations are simple, but elucidating. I downloadd the book in print and from Audible. That may seem foolish, but I can assure anyone that it was not. It made for an enriching experience. First, the Audible version was free as I bought it with a credit, and I got to follow the paperback, taking note as I am want to do in a book I like, while I got to listen to the rich Indian accents of the various narrators.
It was educationally very sound, by the way, to get the input via two senses simultaneously. For me, it was pure delight. See all reviews. There's a problem loading this menu right now. Learn more about site Prime. Get fast, free shipping with site Prime.

Every chapter has comments that draws attention to variations of the story, the intention of the story, the rituals and customs that may have emerged from the story and practiced even today. It explains why the epic is part of the grand Vedic cosmos and how it cannot be understood without appreciating Ramayana, Vishnu Purana, Shiva Purana and Devi Purana 7.
This book has an ending that has never ever been told in any retelling of the Mahabharata. This ending is the reason the book was originally called Jaya by Vyasa.
Devdutt Pattanaik is a master story-teller, as his several books on Indian mythology testify. However, why the Mahabharata? There are several translations and retellings floating around. What value addition can a new one offer? Where is the USP? There are four excellent reasons to read this book.
First, the illustrations, and until carefully reading this, I had not realized that Devdutt does his own illustrations, with some help from his driver. Second, this is not quite an abridged retelling of the Mahabharata.
It is a collection of stories, which of course are the core stories from the Mahabharata. However, these stories occur in other places too, such as the Puranas. What is the Mahabharata? We tend to think of it as the Sanskrit Mahabharata.
Unlike the Ramayana, where there are several versions, authored by several different people, the Mahabharata has been authored by Vedavyasa or Vyasadeva, more accurately, Krishna Dvaipayana. Vedavyasa or Vyasadeva is a title, conferred on someone who collates and classifies the Vedas. The stories are embellished and become richer.
Eventually Karn meets his end at the hands of Arjun during the war. Yama, god of death, is also known as Dharma, god of order. The yagna of the Devas was more important than the happiness of Tara; without the power of yagna, the Devas would be unable to shower the earth with light and rain. He would be called Budh.
